Musicianship Assessment Syllabus

Performance
Student may select songs to perform from any music publication.
Student performs a complete piano piece playing with both hands, sing or other instrument.

Grades 1 and 2:  Perform 1 song, minimum 8 measures.
Grades 3 and 4:  Perform 2 songs, minimum 16 measures.
Grade 5:  Performs 3 songs, minimum 32 measures.

Grade 1 performance level is for a beginning student who has studied piano for about 6 to 10 months.
For each grade thereafter, it requires approximately the same length of preparation time.

Theory
Levels and subjects are based on Dou Dou’s Sight Reading textbooks published by AACM.
Students are required to bring their own pencil and eraser to the examination.

By-Ear Rhythm Clapping
Imitate (“Clap after me”) by clapping the rhythm line clapped by the judge.

Grade 1:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, includes quarter note and eighth note.
Grade 2:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, includes quarter note, eighth note and dotted quarter note.
Grade 3:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, includes quarter note, eighth note and dotted quarter note.
Grade 4:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, includes quarter note, eighth note and dotted quarter note.
Grade 5:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, includes quarter note, eighth note and dotted quarter note.

By-Ear Melody Singing
Imitate (“Sing after me”) by singing the melody line played by the judge.
Student may sing in S
olfège, Lah-Lah-Lah, any vowel, whistle or hum.

Grade 1:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, first 3 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and
                    eighth note.
Grade 2:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, first 3 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and
                    eighth note.
Grade 3:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, first 3 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and
                    eighth note.
Grade 4:    4 measures, imitate 2 measure at a time, first 5 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and
                    eighth note.
Grade 5:    4 measures, imitate 2 measure at a time, first 5 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note,
                         dotted quarter note and eighth note.

Judge plays Tonic Chord and the First Note for the student before starting the exercise.
Student will also sing with the harmony played by the judge.

By-Ear Melody Playing
Imitate (“Play after me”) by playing on the piano or keyboard at the same pitch played by the judge.

Grade 1:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, first 3 notes of C Major, includes quarter note and eighth note.
Grade 2:    4 measures, imitate 1 measure at a time, first 4 notes of C Major, includes quarter note and eighth note.
Grade 3:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, first 4 notes of C Major and G Major, includes half note,
                        quarter note and eighth note.
Grade 4:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, first 5 notes of C Major, G Major and F Major,
                        includes half note, quarter note and eighth note.
Grade 5:    4 measures, imitate 2 measures at a time, first 5 notes of C Major, G Major, F Major and A minor,
                        includes half note, quarter note and eighth note.

Judge plays Tonic Chord and the First Note for the student before starting the exercise.

Harmony
Student harmonizes the melody on a piano or keyboard.

Grade 3:    4 measures, Chords I and V7 of C Major.
Grade 4:    4 measures, Chords I and V7 of C Major and G Major.
Grade 5:    4 measures, Chords I and V7 of C Major, G Major and A minor.

Student first confirms the harmony by playing Chords I and V7 of the key.

By-Sight Rhythm Clapping
Sight-read the rhythm line by clapping.

Grade 1:    2 measures, includes half note, quarter note and quarter rest.
Grade 2:    2 measures, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest.
Grade 3:    4 measures, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest.
Grade 4:    4 measures, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note, dotted quarter note and quarter rest.
Grade 5:    4 measures, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note, dotted quarter note and quarter rest.
                        Student pats treble and bass clef rhythm lines simultaneously using both hands.

By-Sight Melody Singing
Sight-sing the melody line in treble clef.  Student may sing in Solfège, Lah-Lah-Lah, any vowel, whistle or hum.

Grade 1:    2 measures, first 2 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and quarter rest.
Grade 2:    2 measures, first 3 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest.
Grade 3:    4 measures, first 4 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note and quarter rest.
Grade 4:    4 measures, first 4 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest.
Grade 5:    4 measures, first 5 notes of C Major, includes half note, quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest.

Judge plays Tonic Chord and the First Note for the student before starting the exercise.

Sight Reading

Grade 1:    8 measures, C Major, includes quarter note and half note.
Grade 2:    8 measures, C Major, includes quarter note and half note.
Grade 3:    8 measures, C Major and G Major, includes quarter note and half note.
Grade 4:    8 measures, C Major, G Major and A minor, includes quarter note and half note.
Grade 5:    8 measures, C Major, G Major and A minor, includes quarter note and eighth note.

Scales Playing

Grade 3:    C Major, play hands separately.
Grade 4:    C Major and G Major, play hands separately.
Grade 5:    C Major, G Major and A minor, play hands separately.
 

Certificates and evaluation reports shall be presented to all participating candidates.
